Lou Lemenick, The New York Post,
Helen Mirren outdoes even her Oscar-winning performance in "The Queen" with her tour de force as Countess Sofya Tolstoy in director Michael Hoffman's delightful "The Last Station."
It's 1910, and the countess has been married for 48 years to Leo Tolstoy, the most famous author in the world. Although he still rides on horseback, the aged Tolstoy (a terrific Christopher Plummer) is nearing the end of his days and trying to ignore a pitched battle around him that almost rivals his most famous work, "War and Peace."
The combatants are the luxury-loving countess, the mother of his 13 children, and Vladimir Chertkov (Paul Giamatti), Tolstoy's longtime publisher -- and the chief disciple of a religious movement founded by the author, Tolstoyism.
Chertkov is secretly plotting to get Tolstoy to rewrite his will so that the copyrights to his works will not go to his well-heeled family but to the Russian people. Read more...
Rated R; 112 minutes.

Coming Soon: THE YOUNG VICTORIA
Starring Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson & Jim Broadbent
Jackie Loohauis-Bennett, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel,
Emily Blunt plays the title role as events swirl around her in 1837 Britain. Victoria's uncle, King William (Jim Broadbent), is dying, and she is the only legitimate heir to the throne. She's been raised knowing she must become queen, and she spent a stultifying childhood trapped by her overpowering mother (Miranda Richardson) and power-hungry adviser, John Conroy (Mark Strong).
"Even a palace can be a prison," says Victoria, who isn't allowed to even walk down stairs without grasping someone's hand.
As her uncle's health fades, Victoria reaches for the political keys that will set her free. The brilliance of "The Young Victoria"is audiences don't have to have a degree in British history to figure out most of what's happening. The filmmakers created not a stilted epic about Britain's longest-reigning queen but a classic love story that still works for the 21st century. Read more..
Rated PG; 100 minutes.
